Dr. Brian Jackson
VICE PRESIDENT
Dr. Brian Jackson, Chi Ayaabe (Big Buck), MS, Ed.D., is an Assistant Professor at the Institute for Health & Equity at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). He joined MCW in January 2023, bringing with him a wealth of experience working with Native communities and a scholarly focus on Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR). His work is grounded in Indigenous knowledge systems and guided by the values of the Anishinaabe people.
Dr. Jackson earned his B.A. in Youth Development from Concordia University–St. Paul, an M.S. in Indigenous Education, and an Ed.D. in Indigenous Curriculum & Pedagogy from the University of Minnesota. His academic and professional efforts are deeply connected to advancing Indigenous education and restoring Native cultural practices as a pathway to individual and community healing.
He serves on the Great Lakes Native American Research Center for Health (GLNARCH) Community Scientific Advisory Committee representing the Bemidji Area, where he advises on research impacting tribal health and well-being. Throughout his career, Dr. Jackson has developed and led programs for Native American students that combine academic success with cultural identity, using storytelling and Indigenous teachings as key tools for development.
Dr. Jackson is also a certified Family Circles AODA Prevention Program facilitator. In this role, he supports families in exploring behaviors and building healthier lifestyles through cultural education, self-esteem development, and traditional values. His facilitation includes language instruction, teachings in Anishinaabe history, and cultural practices—all aimed at strengthening Indigenous identity and well-being.
With a holistic approach to health, education, and community empowerment, Dr. Jackson continues to advocate for systems change that honors and uplifts Indigenous knowledge in both academic and community settings.
